LEONARD PADILLA, a senior at Quemado High School, has been nominated to Who’s Who Among American High School students for the 1973-1974 school year. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Padilla of Quemado. He is active in athletics, lettering in 4 sports; student government vice-president; has attended Boy’s State and earned All-District honors in basketball and track. He will be competing for one of ten scholarships, from $500 to $1,000 offered by the publishers of Who’s Who.

PLAYING A GUARD position for the Carl Albert Junior College Trojans this season will be Billy Cuellar, a freshman from Socorro, N.M. where he was coached by Tom Clark. In Socorro he was selected as the team’s most valuable player, was the leading rebounder, all state second team, eleventh in the state scoring and first team all-conference. CAJC coach Mike Weiberg notes that “Billy really works for us. He has a good soft touch on the ball and adequate speed.” The coach added that Cuellar “can definitely get in and mix it up inside and goes to the boards well.” The coach feels Cuellar can handle the ball well and also adds that Cuellar is good at keeping spirit high and the team loose when working out.

Cuellar is 6’2” and is 175 pounds, and wears number 34 game suit. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Sonny Cuellar. Bill will be the starter on the Nov. 9th game.

AT APPROXIMATELY 6:20 Monday night the San Antonio Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a fire at the Stone Container Corporation wood chip plant. The wood chip plant located in San Antonio is in the process of being dismantled. According to San Antonio Fire Captain, the fire started when an easterly wind caught sparks from cutting being done on a wood chip hopper that caught weeds on fire. The wind blew hot brands from a combination of burning wood chips and weeds that caught a pile of mesh netting on fire. Mesh netting is used to cover rail cars loaded with wood chips. The substantial part of the fire was netting. Four fire vehicles and 10 firefighters responded to the blaze. The volunteer firefighters worked approximately one and a half hours to extinguish the flames.

November 6, 1999

MIKE’S EXXON on California Street sold a $10,000 winning crossword ticket to a Magdalena resident. The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, went into the gas station at about 6:25 p.m.,complaining that he had to buy a used tire because his was flat. This is the largest ticket winner the gas station has had, but it was reported that in the past the gas station had sold several smaller winning tickets. The station sells a few hundred tickets a day and since the winner was announced, sales have increased by about 50.

ON SEPTEMBER 16, 2014, Wesley Donald Hill was promoted to chief in the U.S. Navy. Wes is a logistic specialist currently serving on the USS Cheyenne, a Los Angeles-class submarine, homeport is Pearl Harbor Naval Base, Hawaii. Wes graduated from Magdalena High School in 1997 and has served in the military since 1998. He is the son of Frank and Darlene Hill of Socorro. Wes has been married to his wife Danya for five years. They have three sons Zane, Daymon and Ethan.
