Socorro Rewind

TWO MAJOR FIRES within a 12 hour period kept Socorro firefighters busy this past weekend. An early morning blaze at Lear’s Trailer Park totally destroyed a trailer home. The fire was reported at 8:48 a.m., but before firefighting equipment could reach the scene, the trailer was burning out of control. Flames consumed all but the trailer shell. Fire Chief Felipe Baca said the cause of the blaze was electrical, possibly relating to a pinched cord from heat tape used to protect pipes from freezing. Damage was placed at $8,000 for the structure and $3,000 for the contents. A second fire at 8:58 p.m. burned 2000 bales of alfalfa on a farm just northeast of the city limits. Firemen subdued the fire after several hours of work, but it continued to smolder Monday. The fire was “of very suspicious origin,” according to Chief Baca. The Sheriff indicated there were suspects. The alfalfa was valued at $6,000.

A COURTESY TRUCK was donated to Boys Ranch last week by Monette Ford of Socorro, represented by Frank and Gloria Benavidez. Benavidez hands the keys over to Boys Ranch campus life director Pat Trembly. Also representing Boys Ranch for the presentation was farm manager Tom Tucker, who is sure to get a lot of mileage out of the 1981 two-tone brown F150 Super Cab Ford Pickup. Boys Ranch, which houses 50 homeless school-age youths, is funded by private donations.
PLAQUES WERE AWARDED to Cecilia Gonzales and Herman Gonzales, Jr. by Frankie Naranjo, local chairman of the Firefighters Fund Drive for Muscular Dystrophy. The two children collected $168.00 in a two-day trek through town last summer, with the money going to the local fund drive. Naranjo informed the state MD headquarters personnel in Albuquerque of the children’s efforts, and the plaques were then ordered especially for the Gonzales’s, complete with their names engraved at the tops. Christine and Herman Gonzales of Socorro are parents of the two children.

$1,728.00 WAS TAKEN from Floyd’s Shamrock Station on California St. in a burglary Saturday night. Entry to the station was believed to have been made by prying open the back door, police said. Two vending machines were opened, and $190.00 in coins removed. Damage to the machines and the rear door was estimated to be $500. $100 was taken from the cash box, which was ready for the start of the next business day. The safe was tampered with, and a money envelope removed, containing $936.00. Investigation is continuing.
