Socorro’s annual celebration returned this weekend, drawing residents and visitors to the historic plaza and surrounding venues for two days of performances, food and festivities.

“Socorrofest is a great time for our community to come together and celebrate with each other,” said Tyler Lam, a local musician who performed on two stages during the weekend. “As a musician, it’s awesome seeing so many different performances throughout the weekend, and it gives us more exposure to people who don’t get to make it out to see shows as frequently.”

The event kicked off Friday evening with performances by The Pacemakers on the Plaza stage, while Box Canyon Brewing Co. and Capitol Bar & Brewery hosted acts including Ben & Val, Johnny Dean and Wredemppshun.

Saturday’s lineup featured a diverse mix of genres and talents, from belly dancing by Et Alia Belly Dance Troupe to high-energy sets by Suavecito, Fretwork Fables and headliners The Dreamboats.

According to their website, the fest’s headliners, the Dreamboats, are a Canadian quartet playing “Classic, original rock ‘n’ roll. Infusing the timeless sounds of the 50s & 60s with a fresh, contemporary energy”

Lam, who has played at Socorrofest for the past three years, emphasized the event’s role in strengthening the local music scene.

“Music is one of the things I appreciate the most. It has brought me closer to so many great people in our community,” he said. “Socorrofest is my opportunity to share that with the rest of the community and celebrate the same appreciation with my fellow musicians and music lovers alike.”

The event was supported by sponsors such as The City of Socorro and New Mexico Tech.

“We had a decent crowd Friday, less than packed,” said Dave Thomas, lead singer of Wredemppshun, who performed at Capitol Bar. “I enjoyed the beer pavilion with all three breweries, the many food stands, Free State of Socorro passports, and all the music.”

“Free State of Socorro” passports encouraged attendees to explore downtown businesses.

With performances spread across three venues, the Plaza, Box Canyon Brewing Co. and Capitol Bar & Brewery, Socorrofest offered something for everyone, all within walking distance.
