Alamo basketball teams are undefeated district champs
Both Alamo basketball teams are District 3A Champions for the 2025-26 season. Their district wins have earned them trips to the first round of the state playoffs.

The Lady Cougars played against the Hondo Valley Lady Eagles at home on Friday, Feb. 27, in their district championship game. They won that game easily 70-24 to earn the Class A District 3 Championship.
“I am extremely excited about being part of the final 16 teams left playing basketball. Our team deserves this since we have to be the shortest team still playing in the history of state tournaments,” Head Coach Randy Hunt said.
The Lady Cougars finished 15-10 overall and were also undefeated for first place in their district at 6-0. All District players were announced the night of the championship, with #2 Butterfly Secatero, #5 Tisha Mexicano, #11 Ania Torres and #30 Layla Apache being named to the All-district Team. Hunt was also named Coach of the Year for the district.
“Undefeated in district was not exactly our goal. Yes, we wanted to win our district to make it to state, but we knew Mountainair and Hondo Valley would be the teams to beat if we wanted a shot at the title. Our girls responded to the challenge and beat both fairly well,” Hunt said.
The Alamo girls will play in the first round of state against Fort Sumner/House on March 6 at 5 p.m. The Fort Sumner/House Vixens are the higher seeded team, so Alamo will be traveling to play them.
“We played a very tough schedule and competed surprisingly well against teams that have a history of making the State Tournament and placing high every year,” Hunt said. “I am so proud of our team and its commitment to give 100% every time they put on their practice gear or game uniform that says Alamo Navajo Lady Cougars.
The Lady Cougars are eager for an upset that will carry them into the next round of the state tournament the following week.
Boys' team
The Cougars finished the regular season at 20-5 overall and an undefeated 8-0 for first place in their district.
The Cougars edged out the Mountainair Mustangs 62-61 on Saturday, Feb. 28. The game was played on neutral ground in Socorro, which is about an equal drive for each of the teams.
#14 Tilial Secatero scored 10 points and #1 Cobre Mexicano had five points in the game. However, the big game was a day for the big three Cougars seniors: #23 Scotty Guerro scored 13 points, #33 Zephaniah Guerro had 11 and #32 Andy Pino led the way with 23 points.
All District: Cobre Mexicano, Tilial Secatero, Scotty Guerro, Andy Pino and Zephaniah Guerro. Andy Pino was recognized for his efforts that night of the district championship as well as throughout the season by being named District Player of the Year.
