While the rodeo clowns brought laughter, bullfighters brought suspense to the Midget Power performance at the Socorro Rodeo Complex last Saturday.

The show featured mini monster trucks, lip-syncing performances and bullfighting.

“Because of our size and the size of the animals, people will ask ‘how could they be doing something like that?’ but for us, we like it,” Luz Trujillo, long-time Midget Power performer, said.

Trujillo said the performers travel all over the United States, wherever they are called. They have been on the road for just over a month and will be heading to Texas next.

She said they come up with new performances every year and make sure the bull riders are capable and confident in mounting bulls and using lassos.

“For the dance performance, we know the order of how things go, but with the bulls, we never know how the animal will react or what he’s going to do. We consider it the serious part of the show,” Trujillo said. She said people get excited about bullfighting because they wonder how someone of their stature will do it.

“This isn’t the kind of spectacle that people often see in the United States, but in Mexico, it is very common,” Trujillo said.

She said that sometimes they have odd interactions in the US, and traveling can be hard, but for the most part, the people are nice, and it’s an enjoyable experience.

“The only difference between us and others is height; everything else is the same… It’s all about respect; if you respect me, I respect you,” Trujillo said.
