With October just around the corner it is time to celebrate Oktoberfest!

This year the Socorro County Historical Society will celebrate Oktoberfest on Saturday, October 5 at the Hammel Museum at 601 North 6th street in Socorro beginning at 11 a.m. There will be the traditional food from the grill featuring brats, sauerkraut, hamburgers and other goodies. Also, at 11 a.m. we’ll kick off the day’s five entertainment features starting with Dr. Comstock’s Oompah band. What could be more traditional than that? The band will be followed at noon by the Et Alia Belly Dancer troop. Wait! Belly dancers at Oktoberfest??? Yes, indeed they are back by popular demand. The entertainment is rounded out by The Sax Quartet, Tyler Lam and George Murillo.

This year the Capitol Bar will be serving an Oktoberfest beer that they have specially brewed for the occasion. While you’re at it you can pick up Hammel Brewery coasters and etched beer glasses as souvenirs of your visit. Other attractions include the Socorro Garden Club and for the kids, the layouts of the Socorro Train Gang Railroad Club including their latest Christmas Raffle layout.

But I’ve saved the best for the last. Each year parking at the museum has proved to be very difficult.

This year we are proud to announce that there is a new parking lot at the rear of the museum complete with a couple of handicap parking slots.

To enter the lot, follow the signs on 6th street at the south end of the front of the museum.
