Students from the Tumbleweed 4-H Club spent Sunday morning putting more than 300 American flags on the graves of Socorro County military service veterans as part of a national project.

“They come out almost every Memorial Day and switch flags,” County Extension Agent Jamie Fassett said. “They learned a lot from this one. It’s interesting because most of them are a high-energy group, and they’re really quiet and calm and respectful during all of this.”

Fassett is just finishing her first year as an extension agent in Socorro County.

“I moved from teaching into extension. I am still working with lots and lots of great kids, but I get to do more agriculture and leadership development now, which is great because these kids are going to be our future leaders not only in agriculture but also in the community. They have a great foundation,” Fassett said.

In all, the club’s morning session of students replaced 336 tattered American flags with brand-new ones. During an afternoon session, additional students went into the county.

How does a person get their child involved in 4-H?

“The easiest thing to do is connect with NMSU Cooperative Extension Service in Socorro County. We’re an arm of New Mexico State. Our office is in the county annex building. You can also search us on Google lists,” Fassett said.
