Come join the fun at Community BBQ Saturday
A barbecue at Sedillo Park on June 1 will help Socorro residents learn more about their community resources.
For the third year running, Kari Hoke is organizing this heartwarming event. It’s not just about the food- it’s about Hoke’s journey and her desire to help others, even if it’s just for a day.
“I had noticed in Socorro people were not just hungry for food but also connection. During the first one we held, I noticed people saying they felt disconnected, especially after COVID,” Hoak said.
Hoak is hoping people will come away from the event feeling better connected and a knowledge there are resources in the Socorro community who help people in a number of different ways.
“One of the things that I remember growing up in this town when we moved here was, I didn’t know what was available in the community when I was trying to get sober. I didn’t know what was available when I was in need. I just struggled through life and tried to figure it out on my own, and I listened to people when they suggested this place or that place. Now, I’ve been interacting with people in our community who don’t know these resources exist,” Hoak said.
Saturday’s free event will start at 11 a.m., and the plan is for the groups and organizations promoting their resources to be available until 4 p.m.
“I hope they come away saying I met someone who can be my friend today. I want them to know that they’re not alone. I want them to know that there is hope. I hope they share it with somebody else in our community so they can get the help they need,” Hoak said.
