The sixth annual La Jornada de las Quebradas race ran this year on a windy Valentine’s Day. The run took place on the third weekend of February in previous years, but competition with other events for volunteers bumped up the event weekend this year.

Two runners pass golden-looking creosotes in the early morning light of the Quebradas.

The Socorro Striders and Riders will have the first 5K of their Spring Series, the Valentine 5K, on Feb. 21 at 9 a.m. by EMRTC on East Rd. The Battle of Valverde reenactment is also taking place the weekend of the 21st by the Escondida Bridge. Then the State Science Olympiad will be taking place at New Mexico Tech on the final weekend of February. Finding the people to help organize an event and see it through to completion becomes a major factor for success.

“This race would have not been possible without the support of @type2gear, the City of Socorro, the Socorro HAM Radio Club, and the Search and Rescue team, and all volunteers,” Race Director Luis Contreras Vidal said.

The Mount Taylor Winter Quad (bike, run, ski and snowshoe) took place in and around Grants on Feb. 14 as well this year. Another endurance race on the same day reduced the entry numbers for La Jornada from previous years. Twenty people were still signed up for the race, but not everyone finished the grueling run this year. Those who did still put on incredibly strong performances though.

“Special shout-out to Benjamin Farroni for running his first 50K in under five hours and claiming the fifth-fastest time,” Vidal said.

This year course record holder Ben Stout returned to try to break his sub-4-hour record from 2023, a time of 3:51:20. Stout was just shy of beating his record speed for the course, but he did finish with the run’s second ever time under four hours.

Results (times in hours: minutes: seconds):

Benjamin Stout, 3:52:48

Benjamin Farroni, 4:56:40

Ellie Fox, 5:30:09

Geoffrey Tweed, 5:38:12

Sarah Olson, 5:41:10

Logan Baird, 6:16:53

Mark Werkmeister, 6:22:43

Local runner Mitchell McLaughlin volunteered for the day. He manned one of the aid stations and then swept a section of the course, grabbing trail flagging tape markers and checking that everyone had made it through.

Kim Bessler, 6:56:14

Kathryn Silva, 7:09:46

Ryan Mundahl, 7:52:38

Eric Mack, 8:07:54

Felix Ortega, 8:13:28

“Another edition of La Jornada 53K is in the books, and once again we’re grateful to the community that made it possible,” Vidal said.
