Dear Sammy: Wisdom from Socorro’s elders

A new voice is joining the pages of El Defensor Chieftain, one rooted in experience, compassion and a touch of morning coffee debate. The Socorro Wellness and Rehabilitation Center, formerly known as the Good Samaritan, is launching a community advice column titled “Dear Sammy.”

Inspired by the beloved “Dear Abby” column, Dear Sammy will feature thoughtful responses from residents at the center, offering advice to Socorro locals who write in with questions, dilemmas, or curiosities. The idea was brought forward by Chastity Kear, who saw an opportunity to share the collective wisdom of the center’s residents with the wider community.

“Every day we sit down and read the Albuquerque Journal, and one of everyone’s favorite parts is reading Dear Abby,” Kear said. “We all sit and discuss what advice we would give before reading what Abby has to say. Sometimes we agree, and sometimes we don’t.”

That spirit of discussion and diversity of thought is exactly what Dear Sammy hopes to capture. One resident noted that Socorro would benefit from “their years of wisdom and experience,” while another emphasized that the group’s morning routine brings together “different viewpoints and experience, though sometimes they all do agree on what advice is best.”

Originally, the column was going to be called Dear Granny, but Kear explained that Dear Sammy felt more fitting, a nod to the center’s former name, the Good Samaritan, and a way to honor its legacy.

Whether you’re facing a personal crossroads, seeking relationship advice, or just curious about what Socorro’s seasoned voices have to say, the residents at Socorro Wellness and Rehabilitation, or Dear Sammy, are ready to listen.
