The inaugural Senior Expo, conducted last Thursday at the Socorro Convention Center, attracted hundreds of seniors who took advantage of essential resources.

At the expo, Presbyterian Socorro General Hospital offered free flu, shingles and pneumonia shots to all seniors. Seniors also had the opportunity to participate in various workshops, such as financial planning, creating an obituary and using cannabis safely.

The expo featured live entertainment by Steppin’ Line, who performed a line dance, as well as a special appearance by AJ, the Albuquerque Journal mascot.

“We went there for my husband to get the flu shot, and I ended up with a ton of information that is very helpful,” Mary Lou Gibis, expo attendee, said.

Gibis said Presbyterian made it easy to get the flu shot and she was happy to learn about transportation services to Albuquerque for medical appointments, advanced healthcare directives and a home healthcare program.

“We found out that they provide transportation to Albuquerque for us to go doctor’s appointments. I did not know that, and that is a wonderful thing.” Gibbs said.

She was also surprised to meet the new Socorro County Manager and enjoyed conversing with him and many others who had booths. Gibis said the event was well organized and would like to see more booths such as exercise programs and dog training for seniors next year.

“Thank you to the community for supporting our first Senior Expo. We had wonderful support from Presbyterian Socorro General Hospital, the City of Socorro and all of our local advertisers in Socorro and Valencia County to make this event possible,” said Wanda Moeller, El Defensor Chieftain publisher.

She said she also appreciates the many individuals who attended the seminars as well as offered their kind feedback on this year’s event.

“We look forward to hosting it again in 2025.” Moeller said.
