Sheriff’s office to host women’s firearms safety
The Socorro County Sheriff’s Office will hold its first Women’s Firearms Safety Class on Nov. 13 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Socorro County Annex Building, 198 Neel Ave.
The free class, sponsored by Sheriff Lee Armijo, is designed to help women feel more comfortable and informed about firearms.
Armijo said the program was created after local women expressed interest in learning about firearms in a safe, supportive environment.
“We live in a world where personal safety matters,” Armijo said. “This class is about empowering women with the knowledge they need to feel secure and informed.”
The two-hour session will focus on basic safety rules, proper handling and operation of different types of firearms, and responsible ownership.
Participants will have the opportunity to handle unloaded firearms under the supervision of certified instructors, including Armijo, who is a firearms instructor. There will be no live shooting during this class.
“A gun is just a tool, like a hammer. It’s all about safety and knowing how to use it responsibly,” said Armijo.
If the event is successful, the sheriff’s office plans to offer additional courses for families, couples and individuals, as well as a second phase that includes live-fire training.
Seating is limited to 25 participants, and registration is required by calling Debbie or Amanda at 575-835-0941.
