RIGHT BACK in his element is senior citizens cook Jim Shinas. There was a lot of sad sighs when Jim closed up his restaurant and retired several years ago. And now there are a lot of contented ones as Jim produces daily luncheons that are making ineligible people around town green with envy. Jim cooks for the Senior Citizens Hot Meals Program under the direction of Winnie Wilson. The program provides homemade soups, sandwiches, and desserts five days a week. Conducted for some months in the Torres Cafeteria, Hot Meals moved to the Community Center after the close of school with the number of senior citizens who participate almost doubling. The pleasant cool adobe house provided by the city and county and Jim’s food are pretty hard to resist.

PLAYING IN THE NORTH-SOUTH All Star baseball game was “The perfect ending to a rough season,” in the words of Kyl Candelaria. The Magdalena pitcher/infielder was chosen to play in the annual game between seniors of A and AA teams. Candelaria played on the South team and was a major contributor to their 10-8 win in the second game of a doubleheader. He played the entire game at third base, singled twice in four at bats and drove in three runs. Candelaria started playing baseball as a 5-year-old in T-ball. As a high school player, Candelaria was named all district for four years and in 2001 was runner-up for district player of the year. His Magdalena High School baseball honors include awards for highest batting average, Golden Glove and Most Valuable Player. He was also named all-district honorable mention in basketball.
