AFTER 28 YEARS of postal service, Mr. Henry Del Curto, Assistant Postmaster, has retired. Henry started his postal career as a substitute clerk in the Socorro post office and rose up from the ranks to the position of Assistant Postmaster which he held upon retirement on July 31. The Socorro post office employees and their wives honored the retiree and Mrs. Del Curto at an outing and steak fry at Water Canyon at which time Mr. Del Curto was presented an Honorary Certificate of Service by Postmaster Carl Dagostino on behalf of the Department. A retirement gift was also presented to him by his fellow employees.

A PICKUP WAS hub-deep in a sewer drainage ditch when the driver, who had turned up on the ditch bank road (parallel to Hope Farm Road) tried to avoid a large boulder, not realizing the ditch was so close because of high weeds. The vehicle turned over as it slid off the side of the bank and righted itself in the ditch. The driver, aged 15, and passenger, aged 16, got out safely, although somewhat muddy. The accident occurred at 8:15 p.m.

CHIEF JOHN CASEY of the Socorro Hose Company No. 1 has received an invitation from the State Fire Marshall’s office to participate as assistant instructor during the Annual Firemen’s training School. In talking to the chief, he informed us that his duties will consist of assisting in the training of firemen from all over the State in all phases of firefighting and demonstrating the latest firefighting equipment. The Socorro Hose Company feels very proud to have their chief participate in this capacity as it demonstrates the caliber of personnel volunteering their services to the department. This training program has been held ever year for the past 15 years and as always, the Socorro Hose Company No 1 will be well represented throughout the entire session.

ALLEN’S DEPARTMENT STORE on California has spacious quarters now in their new location. Becky and George Funkhauser, owners, are busy unpacking a whole new fall stock. Becky just returned from a buying trip to Philadelphia, Dover, Delaware and the east coast to Donn Kenny dress factory in Virginia. She tells us that a large selection is on the way to Socorro for sharp and chic shoppers in Socorro. Becky incidentally picked up her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Buckner and her sister Cindy who is 15 in Pulaski, Va. Surgery planned ahead of time for Becky in Albuquerque necessitated a little family help. Cindy pinch-hitted for Becky at the store-her first job- while her parents kept four-year-old Todd in tow. He also took the trip east with his mother surgery over, Becky marvels at the shower of cards and flowers she received, “Never before anywhere I have lived have people been so kind and nice as here in Socorro,” she says.
