SOCORRO COUNTY officials are looking for ways to tackle treating jail inmates with mental illnesses. County Manager Delilah Walsh alerted the Socorro County Board of Commissioners of their efforts at its meeting. Walsh said the county was responsible for all the inmates’ medical needs, and treating inmates with mental issues were proving to be a challenge. She said the county worked to get her inmates clean of drugs and helped them with their transition back into the general population, but once the inmates are on their own, they don’t continue treatment, which leads to a cycle that seems to be hard to break. Among the problems facing officials are not having enough personnel to treat inmates, and the lack of facilities in New Mexico to treat those with mental illnesses.
