AT THE LAST COUNT the Socorro community raised $27,731 dollars in the Relay for Life, a benefit program of the American Cancer Society. The relay held at Clarkfield began Friday evening and lasted 18 hours, carrying over into Saturday. Each relay team was committed to always having at least one of its members on the track either walking, running, or wheeling. Cancer survivors, 37 of them, headed the event as they walked the first round, the Survivors lap. Each team then walked a lap together. In the evening, luminarias lit the way for the walkers. The event was not all about ceremonies. Members of the relay team were treated to entertainment and food of all kinds as they took a rest. Music and games filled the night including a pajama party followed by a pizza feast at midnight. The money raised from the event is to be applied to cancer research and provide services to cancer patients and their families.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO if you found $100? For a student at Sarracino Middle School, there was no question. As Aimee Serna of San Acacia was walking past the school courtyard, she saw something in the grass. When she picked it up to find out what it was, she discovered much to her surprise it was a roll of five $20 bills. She took the money to the school’s office and explained she found it outside. Serna said turning in the money was the first thing that came to her mind. Serna thought that the money was meant to be a graduation gift as the eighth-grade celebration was the night before. She felt the money must have slipped out a parent’s pocket or purse. Sarracino principal Bob Jiron said he was pleased to find that young people still do things like that.
