BOBBY ROMERO, a native Socorroan who will take over direction of school system bands this fall from departing director Joe Arvizu. All the Romeros appear pleased at becoming Socorro flatlanders again. All indicated they were happy to come home where many members of the large family live but regret leaving Magdalena. “Magdalena has been so nice,” commented Bobby.

MARITA MORGAN, 16-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Morgan of Socorro, has been chosen to live in West Germany for six months as an International Cultural Exchange student. Ms. Morgan will leave July 26 for her eventual destination Achim-Bierden and temporary home with the Hans Seibold family there. Her first four weeks in Europe will be spent attending intensive language and orientation school in Cologne. Marita will be “replaced’ during her absence by a student from Denmark, who arrives in August to spend a year in the Morgan household. Ms. Morgan has studied German for two years at Socorro High School.

A MASKED WOMAN robbed the Bank of America at 11:30 a.m., according to the Socorro Police Department and the FBI. According to an FBI press release, the robber entered the bank wearing a blue and red skeleton mask, a black baseball cap and a red short sleeve T-shirt with white lettering. Witnesses described the robber as a white female with strawberry blond hair pulled into a should length ponytail. She is believed to be in her 30’s, 5 feet 2 inches tall and about 120 pounds. According to the release, the robber entered the bank and handed the teller a note demanding cash and stating that she had a bomb. The teller, according to the release, handed the robber an unknown amount of ash, which she placed in a blue backpack. The robber left the bank and was seen getting into a newer model, four-door gray sedan with a spoiler.

MAGDALENA’S OFFENSE racked up 486 yards of total offense and held Menual to 84 on defense en route to a 50-0 win over the Panthers in Albuquerque. The Steers improved to 2-0 for the season. Magdalena’s sophomore quarterback Jorrell Mirabal went 8 for 17 passing for 147 yards and a touchdown and rushed 19 times for 225 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Steers to the mercy rule victory. Magdalena hasn’t lost a regular game since Nov. 1 of 2013 and has outscored its two opponents this season 90-0.

THE SOCORRO BOYS’ SOCCER team won three games in four days, and the girls team won two games in three days this past week to help the Warriors and Lady Warriors remain undefeated in the month of September. The Socorro boys improved to 8-2 with wins over Sandia Prep’s junior varsity, Robertson and Pojoaque, while the girls remained undefeated in the season at 9-0-1 with wins over Kirtland Central and Pojoaque.
