WIND BLOWS roof off home. A terrific gust of wind lifted the low-pitched roof from the recently built home in the 400 block of Center Street, carried it north across two lots and dropped the pieces on the ground and on a station wagon on the third lot north. The trash cans at the home were not moved by the gust that unroofed the house. A new roof was already being put in.
THE OLD ILFIELD warehouse in Magdalena was destroyed by a fire. The corrugated tin and wood frame building burned after catching fire from a trash fire which got out of control, Magdalena Fire Chief Ambers Guin said. The building was located between Main and Oak streets, across the Santa Fe Railway tracks. The building contained new store equipment belonging to Punch Harris, but no damage estimate was available. Twelve firemen and many volunteers fought the fire, Guin said. Although the warehouse was a total loss, the buildings on either side were saved.
STUART LAMAR KEMPTON, son of Mr. and Mrs. M.L. Kempton, will leave June 28 to serve a two-year mission in northern Germany for the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He is a graduate of Socorro High School and for the past two years has attended Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah.
FOOD FOR CHILDREN in Project Headstart was stolen from the storage room at Garfield Elementary School, City Police Sgt. Pete Archuleta said. A 100-pound sack of potatoes, 50 pounds of flour, and a can of baking powder were taken. Police said there was no evidence of a forced entry. Rupert Trujillo, project director, said someone apparently had a key to the storage room lock.

THE SOCORRO MERCHANTS semipro baseball team will clash with Magdalena in the semifinals of the Middle Rio Grande League playoffs in Los Lunas. The Merchants moved up to the semifinal slot on a bye, while the unpredictable Magdalenans scored a big upset by getting past a strong Tome club 5-4 in a first round game. Socorro and Magdalena split a double header in their only meeting thus far this season. Manager John Didier stated that the Socorro club should be at full strength for the playoffs, with his pitching staff consisting of Connie Gonzales, Max (Rata) Gonzales, David Baca, and catcher-pitcher Abe Baca in top form.

JOE ZUCCO, flight instructor, holds a piece of cloth he just cut from the shirttail of Mrs. Amy Christianson after she flew an airplane alone for the first time. Printed on the cloth will be: “Amy Christianson-First Solo. 6-20-1965. Instructor Joe Zucco.” This a regular ceremony when a student first soloes. Everett Purcell recently made his first solo flight, and Jack Ramzel took his first test and received his private pilot ticket.
