TWO MEMBERS of the Socorro Soil and Water Conservation District were honored at the Region III meeting of the New Mexico Association of Conservation Districts in Deming last month. Larry Whitefield was presented with the Region III Supervisor of the Year award. He was elected to the Socorro Board of Supervisors at the district’s annual meeting last December. A farmer in the Socorro/Luis Lopez area, Whitefield has been very active in district affairs. He has represented the district and valley agriculture at many meetings, regarding the silvery minnow issue, and has been a valuable asset to the board with his knowledge, hard work and willingness to share his time for the benefit of the area. Nyleen Stowe, another relative newcomer to the Socorro District staff, earned the Region III District Employee of the Year Award. A graduate of New Mexico Tech, she began her work with the Socorro district last August and has taken on many of the district’s projects. Stowe was cited for her willingness to help coworkers and to get involved with the district. She’s had experiences that range from digging trenches and connecting irrigation drip tape to stabilizing suction hose in a sediment settling pond.

AFTER 36 YEARS of service with the Socorro Electric Coop, Celina Baca has gone into business for herself and is doing what she enjoys most: baking pies, cakes and other pastries as the new owner of the Holy Cow Ice Cream Shop. Baca plans to add her own line of homemade pastries to the menu at Holy Cow, which she bought from Harry and Carol Kroyer. Baca said she is initiating a featured pastry and ice cream flavor of the week and will take special orders for just about any type of pie. She specializes in carrot cake, cheesecake and German Chocolate, but customers can also call and ask for pecan, apple, lemon meringue, banana, chocolate and coconut pie.

GEORGIA SEERY celebrated her 90th birthday August 7, surrounded by 60 of her friends and former students at the M Mountain Grill at the New Mexico Tech golf course. Before retiring from Socorro Consolidated schools at more than 40 years, she said she could not even come close to guessing at the number of students that passed through her classrooms. But all her students remember her. Seery moved to Socorro from Oklahoma, 69 years ago to begin her first teaching job after graduating from Southwestern State Teacher’s College. When she took on the job of teaching physical education, health, recreation and dance on August of 1945, Socorro High School was located in the now-Finley Gym building and the athletic field was Clarkfield.
