“A SPIKE” or very young deer around eight months old made a visit to Socorro. It even found Socorro Plaza, but dogs gave it a hard time. Finally, Sonny Baca, Jr. saw it near his home on Reservoir and rescued it with the help of Jerry Valles and Junior Lopez. The animal weighed 80 pounds. Thanks to our city employees, the deer is now safe at the refuge.

OVER THE PAST WEEK, more than 25 teenagers have been cited for vagrancy by Socorro police. Many juveniles have been hanging out in parking lots throughout Socorro and police are cracking down. “We don’t want an incident involving kids,” said Chief of Police Johnnie Trujillo. On August 10, six juveniles were cited for loitering at 822 California St. at 9:20 p.m. and at 11:10 p.m. Six more were cited for loitering at 1009 California St. “The officers will continue nightly to cite these congregating juveniles,” said Trujillo. The police department fears that gang related fights or fights in general may break out causing an increase in citations from police officers, particularly those who work in the evenings. Juveniles must appear before a court. The citations are being heard in either the municipal or magistrate court.

NEW MEXICO TECH has been named one of the top ten best engineering colleges in the nation, according to a USA Today study. Coming in at number eight, Tech is considered a great value for the money “due to its high outcomes and relatively low-priced tuition,” the USA Today article said. “The most popular majors for undergraduates are Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering. Students who graduate with a degree in engineering report average starting salaries of $59,000. The rankings are determined from a formula that takes into account the percentage of students enrolled in a particular field of study, how many majors in a field of study are offered and the average ranking for all the majors in a field. Tech President Dan Lopez said the university has always been strong in the various engineering disciplines, and that the new ranking is justified.
