DINO’S FINA SERVICE STATION was broken into, the break-in reported at 7:00 a.m. on June 25th. City Police officer Steve Saavedra made the investigation, reporting that a window on the east side had been broken and then cranked up from the inside. The subject then went to the storage room and ripped the hasp off the door, then exiting by the front door. Nothing was missing, and there was no money in the station, so the effort netted the would-be thief nothing for his labot.

THE FIRE DEPARTMENT, on emergency stand-by last weekend, due to walk-out by employees and former chief, reported three fires as having been set deliberately. City police are investigating the reports and have some leads. One fire call which was made was not arson, but a woodpile caught on fire. However, at the scene of a fire at the North End Bar in Florida, persons unknown lit a rag and then threw it on the roof; then departed in a car. A beer can with kerosene residue was found. The fire call came in at 2 a.m. on July 6th. One half hour later, a resident in the area of the Old Opera House reported a fire had been set on the doorstep of the historic building. Witnesses saw two subjects in a pickup in the area. Also, a two gallon can with kerosene residue was found at the scene. A fire at the end of 5th street was believed to be deliberately set. An abandoned shack was completely burned up. Fire volunteers had a few moments of trouble in putting out the brush surrounding the area. Cars ran over fire hoses which deterred firemen in pulling them over to the burning brush. Mayor Gene Coulson was at the scene of the fire as a volunteer fireman.

A SOUTHWESTERN CHEERLEADER from Socorro jumped at the chance recently to travel to the land Down Under and came back with memories, a medal and a job offer. Angela Chavez was selected to perform with the New Mexico High School Cheerleading Team at the Down Under Bowl XI in Australia. The Down Under Bowl is administered through International Sports Specialists and serves as an exchange program in which American high school students travel to Australia to participate in football games either as players or cheerleaders. While in Australia, the students are given tours and allowed the opportunity to perform in other places other than the bowl. Chavez performed during the game between the New Mexico all-star team and the Kentucky team as well as the game between New Mexico and Arkansas.
