AIRMAN WILFRED CARRASCO was selected Attack Squadron One Nine Six’s Airman of the Month for October from among many outstanding sailors in the squadron. The honor is based upon professional performance, personal appearance, military bearing and leadership qualities. U.S. Navy Commander r.E. Wilks wrote to Carrasco’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred L. Carrasco of Socorro, saying, “Wilfred’s devotion to duty, attention to detail, and cooperative attitude are indicative of his professional and personal pride which have contributed to the successful accomplishment of his squad’s mission in the defense of our country.”

BLM EMPLOYEES in the Socorro offices vacated desks at noon Monday after being told they were on “furlough”. Theresa Zebrowski explained to the assembled employees in the main BLM office that they could remain but would not be paid for services until President Reagan signed a funding bill. That news arrived later Monday night as Reagan signed a revised emergency money bill extending temporary funding. Meanwhile for the remainder of day, only Mariane Stein and district manager Arlen Kennedy were left at the main office to mind the store and answer phone inquiries about the fate of local federal employees.

THE SOCORRO HIGH School girls’ basketball team opened the 1981-82 season with a resounding win as they dropped the Pintos 61-28. The Warrior starters had a balanced attack with Juanita Romero, Valerie Gutierrez, Jolinda Cuellar, and Tara Spurlock scoring 10 points each and Joyce Crespin with nine. The score was knotted at four-all when the Warriors went into a full court press and reeled off eight straight points. Coach Dennis Stanley called off the press in the second quarter as the game was in hand. In the second half the reserves saw a lot of action. Freshman Melissa Valencia chipped in six points and sophomore Debbie Torres canned in four in her one-quarter of varsity play. Senior Dawn Weaver, a newcomer to Warrior basketball got her first basket to round out the scoring.

THREE ACCIDENT VICTIMS walked free from their vehicles following a collision at the corner of Spring and Park Streets. They were treated and released from Socorro General Hospital. The driver, age 22, of the upturned GMC pickup, was cited by police for failure to yield after making a stop, according to City Police Chief Jim Naranjo.

The driver was making a left turn from Park St. eastbound onto Spring when she collided with a pickup driven by an 18-year old male. The driver’s sister was also a passenger in the truck.
