THE DISCOVERY OF A LONE black briefcase sitting upright next to a dumpster at New Mexico Tech’s Brown Hall was enough reason to make New Mexico Tech campus police suspicious. Tech police were alerted and as a precaution asked that everyone working in Brown Hall, including university President Dan Lopez, leave the building. By 10 a.m., a wide area of the campus surrounding Brown Hall had been cordoned off with crime scene tape, and two streets were closed to both pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Officers from several agencies including Socorro Police Department, Socorro County Sheriff’s office and New Mexico State Police, as well as the Socorro Fire Department arrived on the scene to give assistance. Two State Police bomb squad officers and a remote-controlled robot were also called in. According to New Mexico Tech Public Information Officer Thom Guengerich, the briefcase was virtually empty. It looked like a new, unused briefcase, he said. “Shortly before noon the briefcase was x-rayed by State Police and was determined to be safe,” Guengerich said. “It was then removed, and everyone was allowed back in the building.” Class schedules were not affected.
