JOE MUSE has opened a new lumber business in Socorro just south of KOA. The new business is called “Oso Grande” which is a second yard in the Rio Grande area. The owner, Mike Gay, is operating the other yard in Belen. Muse will be the local manager and soon will have an office building constructed in the yard. Currently he is taking orders at the site, and each day is getting in more lumber of all grades for construction, as well as rough cuts. He plans to deal both with retailers and wholesalers, and a large stock will soon be available, he promises. Muse is former Socorro County deputy sheriff and resigned to open this new and needed business in Socorro.

AUGUST 28, 1975

THE 1975 HOLDER of the Miss Rodeo Southwest title, Sharon Daniel of Socorro, has officially entered the queen competition planned at the 1975 New Mexico State Fair in Albuquerque. The 20-year-old Sharon, whose nickname is Sherry, has been competing in rodeo barrel racing for the past two years. Her nine-year-old horse, Plucky Crescent, is half quarter horse and half thoroughbred. Sherry, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Daniel, is sponsored in the State Fair contest by the Socorro County Fair and Rodeo Association. Sherry graduated from high school in 1973 and plans to go to college to study fashion merchandising.

SOCORROANS RYAN ROMERO and Kayla Cline recently went into Roswell and launched some identified flying objects: Golf balls. Their golf shots flew straight and true for the most part in the hometown of Hall of Fame golfer Nancy Lopez. Romero finished fifth in the boys 7-9 division of the Sun County Section PGA Junior Championships, while Cline won the 10-11 age division. Both were named to the all-sectional team, Cline as player of the year in her age division.

SOCORRO CONSOLIDATED SCHOOLS has hired a new superintendent. Roy Herrera, of Bayard takes the helm Wednesday. After a Tuesday closed session, the school board unanimously selected him to replace Jo Ann Salome, who stepped down Wednesday after four years as superintendent. The board selected the 48-year-old Herrera over five others, including Cynthia Freeman, an assistant superintendent for Socorro Consolidated School District. Herrera said as superintendent, he will listen to parents’ concerns. The biggest challenge is gaining acceptance within the community. Herrera said he feels one of his strengths is public relations.

ON SEPT. 16, the Socorro County Sheriff’s Office was notified that a male fugitive of Socorro had been arrested in Princeton, Minnesota, on a Sheriff’s Office warrant charging the man with multiple counts of rape and other charges, such as aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against a household member, battery against a household member, battery against a household member and assault against a household member, Sheriff William Armijo said. The dates of the reported rapes range from 1998 through August of 2015. According to Princeton, Minnesota, police report, the man was reported as a suspicious person walking down the street when police made contact with him.
