APRIL 15, 1975
AFTER CUTTING a hole in the back wall of the compressor room at Supermarket late Saturday night, a would-be burglar got for all his troubles a lantern, a pair of binoculars and a pair of pliers. The intruder entered the office of the store and disconnected the T.V. monitor and then turned off the lights. He then went to work on the safe, trying to take off the hinges but nothing gave, so he left by the back way. The break-in was discovered the next morning.
WALKING FOR DIMES to go to the March of Dimes Saturday morning netted some $70 as hardy City Councilmen Tony Jaramillo, Hubert Hardern, Raymond Gallegos and Larry Gallegos walked all the way from city hall to the over-pass north of town. Volunteers adding to the fund were in the March of Mothers and at a roadblock on California. The grand total collected for the county drive was $1,432.37

LOUISE TUCKER was given a surprise barbecue at Sedillo Park to honor her loyal service. Tucker has spent the last 25 years serving the Midwest New Mexico CAP Socorro Headstart, overseeing the education component. She makes sure there are lesson plans, developmental screening for children and technical assistance when needed along with other duties. She received a plaque from her co-workers in recognition of loyal and hard work. She started working at HeadStart in March 1976. She graduated from the University of New Mexico and has a master’s in business administration from the University of Phoenix.

THE CITY OF SOCORRO’S Stars Cheerleaders brought home 3rd place from the Spirit Festival. The girls, 10 in all, brought home the trophy in the cheer and pom-pom routine. The girls’ coach Denise Contreras said, “They worked very hard, and they did a fantastic job.”

NEW MEXICO’S Boards of Education announced the selection of 78 deserving individuals to receive the New Mexico School Boards Association 2016 Excellence for Student and Achievement Award. Students and staff from Socorro and Magdalena were named award recipients, including Socorro students Alizabeth Saenz, Matthew Lucero, Tyler Crespin and staff members Theresa Apodaca and Margaret Stanley; and Magdalena staff member Mary Ann Mirabal. The award seeks to enhance and focus on efforts to improve student achievement in school districts throughout New Mexico. It recognizes recipients for their role in improving student achievement at the local district level.

SOCORRO WARRIOR Isaiah Anaya recorded a hole-in-one at the Roswell Spring Classic. Anaya, a junior, made his ace on the par 3 sixth hole with a seven iron. The Warriors placed sixth overall in the 18-team field contested over two days and achieved their eighth and ninth team legs with team scores of 328 and 319. Warrior Ricky Silva placed fourth individually with scores of 79 and 71, as he continued to lead the team. Other Warrior scores included Dennise Woods 77-79, Sean Morre 85-84, Isaiah Anaya with 88-85 and Jeremy Gallegos with 87-95.
