APRIL 22, 1975
TODD FUNKHOUSER and Kimberly Cases were Mrs. Gonzales’ third-grade class declamation contest winners at Torres School. Thirteen students participated. Kimberly, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Cases, won first place and Todd, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Funkhouser, second place.
APRIL 24, 1975
SIX LADIES completed a 10-week Cake Class taught by Marge Trujillo. They were Betty Houston, Jan Smoake, Patricia Canter, Nell Kumley, Christine Tafoya and Cecilia Romero. The ninth cake done in class was a novelty cake. Each student was asked to make it as original as possible. A large green frog with lots of warts, won 1st prize by Nell Kumley. The 2nd prize was awarded to Patricia Canter for a Mushroom. The 3rd prize was a Tweedy Bird in a cage by Betty Houston.

THE SOCORRO HIGH School Dance Team took full advantage of their moment in the spotlight. They knew that when you get only one chance each year to show your stuff, you need to make the most of it – and they did. Competing in the State Spirit Competition at The Pit. The Lady Warriors placed second in AAA and came home with the school’s first state trophy in dance. Each team in the competition, and 110 schools entered in their various classifications, performed two routines. The scores from each routine determined the overall winner. Socorro won the Prop competition, an event that requires the team to perform a dance using props. That first place, combined with a third in pompom, gave Socorro the runner-up spot behind St. Michael’s.

SOCORRO LEGEND and former sheriff Elfego Baca is featured in an article in “The Economist,” perhaps the world’s most prestigious business news magazine. The article comes under the headline, “John Wayne, in Spanish.” The magazine is published in London. It was apparently generated by the interest of Catron County citizens in getting the NM Legislature to put up $100,000 for a memorial to Baca in Reserve. Baca has been made somewhat into a legend and was the subject of a major film by Walt Disney Studios in 1958. After many close calls, Baca died in 1945 at the age of 80.

EIGHTEEN VEGUITA seniors took part in an adult Easter Egg hunt at the Veguita Senior Center. The hunt, which included a total of 240 hidden eggs, was organized by site manager Pat Johnson. Cecelia Romero, 80, was the winer of the grand prize.

THE LADY WARRIORS golf team won their 11th consecutive title. Mia Salome was individual district champion shooting a solid 76. Pearson shot 87 and earned individual district runner-up. Both girls were named First Team All-District as the No. 1 and No. 2 players. Aubry Anaya shot 93, finishing in sixth place. Brianna Munguia shot 106, finishing in 10th place. Both Anaya and Munguia were named Second Team All-District. Teresa Lucero shot 108 to finish 11th. The Lady Warriors shot 362, edging out Silver City who shot 368. Coach Margaret Stanley was named District Coach of the Year for the 11 consecutive time.
