KIDDIE HIGH students were treated to a tour of First National Bank and received some treats. All were colorfully dressed in Halloween garb, from the bank employees to the preschoolers. The children are all students of an in-house preschool at SHS under veteran instructor Merri Asebedo. The preschool is part of a course in child development taught by Asebedo through the SHS Home Ec department. It was a colorful morning, a welcome break from banking business.
AS OF FRIDAY MORNING, 72 New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology students were treated at Socorro General Hospital Emergency Room for what initially was termed a type of food poisoning. Hospital Administrator James Rosenbaum said that of the 72, 13 were admitted, nine of whom were still being treated as of Friday morning. All the students ate at the NMIMT cafeteria. Rosenbaum said, however, that the cause of the students’ maladies is still unknown. Rosenbaum said students seen Friday morning exhibited different symptoms than those treated late Thursday night, including running fevers. A state medical team including an epidemiologist was expected to arrive Friday. They will be taking cultures. Tech will cooperate fully with the state investigation agencies. Food services have resumed.

THEY MADE IT! Holm Bursum, Jr. and Gladys Bacon went puffless for 24 hours last Thursday during the American Cancer Society sponsored Great American Smokeout, celebrated nationwide. The two pledged to kick the cigarette habit- at least for 24 hours- an accomplishment well worth heralding. Bursum had gone without his Chesterfields for a week by Thursday. And by mid-morning Friday, Gladys was “still working on it,” she said. Gladys managed to chew gum, mints and drink volumes of coffee but found additional support from townspeople. “People have really been super!” she said. Both Bursum and Gladys join other here in Socorro who breathed a little easier Thursday night and Friday morning.
