DESPITE COLD winds, two energetic girls from Zimmerly School constructed two snowmen in front of one’s home. Patricia Saavedra, daughter of Florencio Saavedra and Jo Lynn Cuellar, daughter of Sonny Cuellar made and attired the snowmen.

MARIAN T. LUCERO AND GEORGE ZAMORA, recent graduates of Socorro high School, last semester were presented the University of New Mexico Alumni Association Outstanding High School Achievement Award. Their awards included checks for $50 each and plaques commemorating their achievement.

THE SOCORRO BASS CLUB held their awards banquet at K-Bob’s Steakhouse to present awards for the 2000 fishing season. President Bud Stephenson gave awards for the State Federation to Ron Gilworth and Carlos Lucero. Ron received the Director of the Year for his work spearheading the effort to build a freshwater hatchery in our state. This venture is well on its way with the help of our State Rep. Don Tripp. For the third time, Carlos was awarded Newsletter of the Year for his writing abilities and his use of graphics. For the club, Ron won Angler of the Year for accumulating the most points during the tournaments and Bud was runner-up. Ron won the Club Championship Tournament again and Bud was second. Bud was awarded Mr. Bass for his dedicated work for the club. Todd Reynolds and Donald Monette won the title of Club Team Champions. Todd also won Non-Boater of the Year for accumulating the most points as a non-boater.

A MAN WIELDING a box cutter Monday evening was reported to have robbed the Family Dollar located at 1019 California St. The man came into the store and pulled out the box cutter and demanded all the cash in the drawer, according to a Socorro Police report. The suspect took $117 in cash. The employee working at the Family Dollar was putting away items when the suspect came in and motioned to the clerk to stay where he was, the report stated. There were no injuries reported in the incident and no property taken except for the cash.
