A SOCORRO POLICE OFFICER was injured last Friday night while investigating a hit-and-run accident on the east frontage road when he was hit by a passing motorist. The patrolman is still in an Albuquerque hospital as of Wednesday afternoon after sustaining a leg injury when he was hit by a Ford driven by a driver aged 75. The officer was standing checking skid marks on the north side of the road when the vehicle hit him. The driver did not see the officer as he was looking to the other side of the road where emergency equipment was flashing on the city patrol unit. The driver was cited for careless driving.
ONE OF THE STAR holiday attractions during the annual Chamber of Commerce sponsored Candy Cane Parade were Bobby Romero and the E.E. Torres Elementary School flute-a-phone-ists. The elementary school students drew applause and smiles as they marched past in colorful bedtime garb complete with night caps before a banner heralding “The Night Before Christmas.” The clever entourage kept the beat to the marching foot of Bobby Romero as they “fluted” away to their own drummer.

THE SOCORRO MIDDLE SCHOOL band and chorus, under director Leroy Lovato, presented a lively and entertaining holiday concert in the SMS gymnasium. Selections included spirited seasonal favorites as well as a variety of contemporary hits. Solos by band members were interspersed with choral selections all preceding musical arrangements by the band. Lovato also played guitar accompaniment on several of the choral arrangements. A good-sized crowd of parents, relatives and other appreciative listeners provided the appropriate audience for this kind of holiday treat.

THE ANNUAL COVER Mother and Child for Defensor Chieftain’s Christmas issue are Gloria and Toni Jean Jaramillo. Mrs. Jaramillo is the former Gloria Gonzales. On Toni Jean’s parental side is her proud father, Toni Jaramillo, Jr. He is the son of Socorro’s mayor Tony Jaramillo, Sr. and Gloria Jean Jaramillo. The new baby is named after both grandparents and her father Tony, Jr. She was born in September. She will soon share the spotlight in her extended family with her siste, Claudia, 8, and brother, Shane, 11. But right now Toni is basking in all the attention this Christmastide. Baby was baptized in San Miguel Catholic Church when she was two weeks old.
LIKE A PICTURE out of a holiday treasure book, Leslie Torres and “Hootie” portray the glitter and charm of Christmas. The two are inseparable when together, and the affection between pet and child is two-way. Hootie, a poodle and terrier cross, belongs to Leslie’s grandmother, Mrs. Estevan Torres of Socorro. Leslie is the daughter of Steve and Layla Torres, and with her mother in 1973 graced the cover of Defensor Chieftain in its annual Madonna and Child feature portrait.
