TWO YOUNG MEN were cited by city police on July 14th at 4:30 a.m. when the car in which they were riding ran into the median on California and damaged a street light pole. The driver allegedly fell asleep while under the influence of alcohol. Both the driver and passenger were jailed. The driver was charged with assault on a police officer and resisting arrest. The passenger was also charged on the same counts and as party to a crime.
PRACTICE OF HIS horticultural skills turned out to be a poor activity for a resident who lives on Lopezville Road here in Socorro. City Police Chief Robert Glasscock, State Police Officer Ray Storment and Joe Muse of the county sheriffs were driving through Lopezville about 5:30 p.m. July 16 and observed what they judged to be a marijuana plant protruding from the man’s window. The officers secured a search warrant, entered the house and confiscated the healthy-looking pot of greenery, estimated at under eight ounces. A small vial was also recovered which the officers believe to contain cocaine. Lab analysis is pending. The man has been charged in two separate arraignments, the first a misdemeanor in connection with the marijuana charge, the second a possible felony, should lab work identify the material as cocaine.

VACATIONS ASIDE, it’s been a long time since Edmund “Ted” Kase III did not have to go down to the courthouse on Monday morning – 43 years to be exact. Kase finished up his last case as Seventh District Court Judge on July 18 with a decision to revoke parental rights in a child negligence case.
“It was one of those cases that wasn’t too happy. Those are tough,” he said in an interview at his home in Socorro Monday morning. Kase said he plans to enjoy being with his children and his grandchildren. “And to go fishing,” he added.
Kase was appointed judge to the Seventh Judicial District by Governor Bruce King in July of 1971. His career in the legal profession began in the 1950s. After graduating from Princeton, he was drafted in the U.S. Army, serving for two years as a German translator.
He received his juris doctorate degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1959.
By 1961, he had hung his shingle as a practicing lawyer in Socorro. He also served as assistant district attorney from 1965-1968.
Since he took office as District judge 43 years ago, Kase has presided over cases too numerous to remember, but the ones he remembers with fondness are adoptions and weddings.
