AUGUST 5, 1965
AN EIGHT-YEAR-OLD boy of Socorro, reported missing, was found safe while walking on the Santa Fe Railway tracks towards Socorro with two other boys, the sheriff’s office reported. The boys were spotted by Onesimo Vigil, Santa Fe section foreman, south of Socorro and north of Hope Farms. The missing boy was taken home by his mother and Undersheriff James Luckie, who were searching for him. The sheriff’s office said the boy had gone with two young friends to spend the night at their home south of Hope Farms. The three were headed for Socorro when discovered by Vigil.

SMAJ. HARRY MOSSGIAN of White Sands Missile Range, the national vice-president of the Non-commissioner Officers Association of the United States, presents 1SGT. Alvin L. Sanders, Jr., president of the Stallion Site chapter, the charter for the Stallion unit. The primary purpose of the organization is to help build spirit in the noncommissioned Officers Association of the United States, previce, Sanders said. The association offers a free $1000 death and dismemberment policy, a group life policy, provides auto financing so that a man in service can take a car anywhere without refinancing, recommends legislation it feels is favorable to the military and opposes legislation it feels is unfavorable.

PETITIONS CHARGINGS SNIFFING glue have filed against nine juveniles who were apprehended in an abandoned adobe shack on Nicholas Avenue. City Police Sgt. Pete Archuleta reported. The boys ranging in age from 13-17, are scheduled to appear in juvenile court. The juveniles were apprehended in their “clubhouse” by Archuleta and City Policeman Jack Ulibarri and Mevin Ratzlaff. Police said they surrounded the shack and caught the boys as they tried to escape through the one window and the door. They handcuffed the boys in pairs. Police reported they seized several tubes of the glue, rags on which the glue is spread for sniffing, an empty vodka bottle, an empty gin bottle, and a knife. The juveniles were released to their parents pending their appearance in court.

NORMAN BILES and the senior girls’ relay team, both Socorro Aquatic Club, placed eighth and sixth, respectively, in the New Mexico State Age Group and Open Long Course Swimming Championships. Biles finished the men’s open 200-yard meter breaststroke competition in 3:37.5, taking eighth in his category. The senior girls’ relay team from Socorro composed of Lia Sylvester, Lynn Hathaway, Linda Keizzer and Anne Brown, finished the 200-meter freestyle relay in 2:51.1 taking sixth place. First place was awarded the Army, Navy and Air Force team which finished in 2:17.8.
AUGUST 17, 1965
SOCORRO’S NEW HIGH SCHOOL, to be built on a 90-acre tract north of the National Guard Armory, will look like the model made by Wright and Underwood, Albuquerque architects. Preliminary plans, subject to modifications, were approved at a special meeting of the board of education. The higher structure at the left is the gymasium, and at the right is the main building comprising classrooms, shops, and administrative offices. The open space in the center of the main building is a patio. Total estimated cost for the first phase is about $750,000.
