DECEMBER 19, 1974

RICHER MAN, Charles S. Abalos of Socorro, is $125 richer because he found the money hidden by Tri-dent Cable TV Inc. Abalos said he watched faithfully for the clues each day and began hunting the first day. He found the money at the old drive-in theater. He is employed as a clerk for the Bureau of Reclamation in Socorro.

DON BARTLETT, president of Bama, Inc. of Roswell, franchisers for Tastee Freez in Southern New Mexico and West Texas, and George Mitros, president of Tastee Freez International of Chicago, congratulate George MacLeod, owner of the Socorro Tastee Freez Store and his two managers, La Vella Mercer and Diane Phillips, for having the store with the highest gross sales in 1974 for stores in the franchise area with 10 to 50 seats. The award was presented in Roswell during the State Convention.

DECEMBER 24, 1974

LEROY JOHNSON placed on the First Team Offense as one of three backs in the AAA All-State Balloting. Running back for the Warriors since his junior year, Johnson was the only Socorro player to make the First Team. Jell Billings help us Socorro’s record by placing as outstanding end on the Second Team Offense. Honorable mention Defense end was Socorro’s Bill Haley. Johnson also received recognition by being named to the Second Team defensive unit as a linebacker. Artesia dominated the AAA All-State balloting in state prep football championship. The Bulldogs received seven first team berths in the balloting. Selection is made by coaches, sportswriters and sportscasters Both Billings and Johnson graduate this May from Socorro High School. Hayley will be a senior next year.

DECEMBER 15, 1999

A STRUCTURE FIRE east of Bernardo sent a man by helicopter to the University of New Mexico Burn Unit. Undersheriff George Van Winkle said a neighbor reported a fire at the man’s home. The man went back in the residence to try and save his pets. According to fire personnel, the man was successful in his rescue attempt. However, once he came out of the home, he had first and second-degree burns and was suffering from smoke inhalation. The Sheriff’s deputy and Socorro fire department responded to the fire and secured the area.

JANELLE ARMIJO AND GINA PAIGE EGLER of Socorro have been inducted as charter members of the newly installed Delta Iota Chapter of New Mexico State University. Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity is an active organization based on the principles of scholarship, leadership and fellowship. Students from all academic disciplines with a grade point average of 3.0 are eligible.

LOCAL GIRL SCOUT Brownie Troop #1292 recently visited Good Sam’s Nursing Home dressed as elves. They sang several Christmas carols with piano accompaniment in an effort to brighten the senior’s spirits. They also gave homemade Christmas cards to the residents.
