LEE J. BARKER, a 1974 graduate of the University of New Mexico College of Pharmacy, is the New Mexico winner of a national competition. The National Association of Retail Druggists, in cooperation with pharmaceutical manufacturer Eli Lilly & Co., sponsored the contest for the first time this year. A pharmacy student was selected in each state who submitted the best paper on “The Challenge and Opportunities of Being a Community Pharmacist.” Each state winner received a $100 award. Barker, who is the son of Mrs. J.C. Barker of Socorro, is now employed by Furr’s Pharmacies in Albuquerque. He and his wife are the parents of a 10-week-old son, Brad. “Pharmacists see many patients before the doctor does,” Barker said in his paper, and often “it is the pharmacists’ professional judgment which provides laymen with recommendations concerning their problems.” He urged full inclusion of the pharmacist as an equal member of the American health team, along with physicians, and encouraged pharmacists to present a unified force “to meet the challenges if we are to share the rewards.”
ROBERTA (BOBBIE) LAM, bride elect of Gary Stendel was honored at a “Spice and Rice” party Sunday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Jane Gregg in Magdalena. Mrs. Gregg and her daughter, Mrs. Ed Tanner, were hostess and co-hostess. A beautiful bouquet of white Shasta Daisies and purple phlox graced the coffee table. The afternoon was spent filling little net bags with “bird seed”, which are to be given to the guests at the honoree’s wedding in August and will be thrown instead of rice. The hostess presented the bride-to-be with a kitchen spice rack.

A SOCORRO NATIVE escaped Tuesday evening from the Central New Mexico Correctional Facility in Los Lunas. Before his capture, state police tracked him to Isleta. “We had gotten a couple of calls,” said state police officer Mark Umprovitch, that the suspect was headed toward Isleta. The state police contacted Isleta and the two agencies proceeded to scour the Isleta area. Witnesses notified Isleta police that they thought they had seen him at a gas station. Officer William Wegmuller found the 34-year-old and took him back to the Los Lunas facility. He was in “medium custody” at the facility on a six-year term for charges including armed robbery.

ONCE WELL-KNOWN for the best beer and ale in New Mexico when William G. Hammel founded his Illinois Brewing Company in 1863, Socorro will once again be home to locally made beer as The Twisted Chile Brewing Company opens for business. The brewery and restaurant located in the Juan Jose Baca House on Abeyta Street, is owned and operated by the K.C. McFadden family.
The Twisted Chile will open its door July 25. As for Twisted Chile’s menu, it will include not only favorites like chicken wings, Reubens, Rio Tacos and other standard fare, but wood oven pizzas, calzones and stromboli. Open faced burgers prepared in the wood oven among other rotating specials will be featured. The fledgling restaurateurs pledge to keep the menu simple and the prices reasonable.
