The Socorro Senior Center continues to grow as a heartfelt hub for elders in the region, thanks to strong city sponsorship, dedicated staff and a network of generous community partners. Now in its third year of collaboration with the City of Socorro, the center has expanded its reach and programming, including the successful opening of a second site.

“We were able to open the Veguita site,” said Desiree Martin, assistant director for the senior center. “The building is owned by the county, but run by the city.”

This expansion has allowed more seniors to participate in activities and access services, including outings sponsored by Kirsten Keller, executive director of Middle Rio Grande Economic Development, who regularly treats Veguita residents to lunch and helps them stay engaged in the community.

“We want to talk about how well we’re doing with the City of Socorro, their support, their sponsorship,” said Linda Mares, director for the senior center. She also emphasized help from Mayor Ravi Bhasker. “He sponsors our dances, he had a big hand in helping to fund the extra activities.”

Among the most popular events are monthly bingo nights, open to everyone, and casino runs. Movie nights at the Loma Theater have become a cherished tradition, held on the last Wednesday of each month. These evenings are quietly funded by a secret donor who has sponsored the program for the past two years. Looking ahead, the center is preparing for Halloween festivities and Senior Day at the New Mexico State Fair.

Employment opportunities for senior citizens have expanded through partnerships with Goodwill Industries and the Senior Employment Program. The center also welcomed youth workers through the summer employment program, with four teens teaming up with drivers to deliver meals and spend time with seniors.

“Every summer we get some of the kids to come back because they love it,” Mares said. “They request to be here.”

The kitchen has a reputation for its tasty preparation of daily meals and special events, such as the annual Thanksgiving dinner that is supported by local donors.

“(Safe Harbor and the Spring Street Thrift Store) have donated for a lot of different things,” Mares said. “We have great community help.”

For those seeking services or transportation, the center can be reached at 575-517-5059. Socorro Transportation provides local rides for seniors and can be contacted at 575-835-1501. Veguita Center is located at 894 Hwy 304 to visitors from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
