Gunfights, rodeo and a matanza are on the agenda for the sixth annual Frontier Festival in Magdalena on Saturday.

“We’ve got gun fighters this year. They’re gonna rob a safe, they’re gonna rob a rail car, and they’re gonna shoot up the town.” Jim Sauer, Frontier Festival organizer, said.

The New Mexico Gunfighters is a Wild West re-enactment group founded in 1979. They put on humorous, educational and family-friendly performances. Sauer said they will be a new and exciting addition to the festivities on Saturday.

The Frontier Festival events kick off Friday night with live music on Main Street. Saturday morning, visitors can enjoy a parade down Highway 60 followed by the first of four Wild West reenactments throughout the day.

The Matanza meat roast by April Otero and her husband Javier at the grass patch next to Richard Torres building and an Enchilada meal from 11 a.m. -5:30 p.m. with Renee and Bryan Baca at parish hall church.

At 1 p.m., the “Buckin into Summer” Junior ranch rodeo begins at the Magdalena rodeo grounds. The rodeo put on by Crossline Rodeo Company will feature team sorting maverick branding, Junior Senior team roping and stray gathering and trailer loading.

Most events will take place at the historic Ilfeld building, Magdalena Public Library, Village Hall, Main Street, and Golden Spur. Demos on blacksmithing, wool spinning, water and mineral workshops will be available throughout the day.

Historical presentations on the Magdalena Railroad, the US Calvary, and the Indian Wars will be held at the Library, along with crafts for kids. In honor of Western heritage, from 11 a.m. to noon, a propane forge will be ready for ranchers to burn their registered brands into the wood posts of the gazebo next to the library.
