Veterans: tapping into the healing process

Published Modified

Strongpoint Theinert Ranch (STR), a non-profit nestled in the foothills of the Magdalena Mountains, has announced its 2025 veteran retreat schedule. Two of the six planned retreats are dedicated to female veterans, offering a supportive environment for healing and connection. Each retreat aims to empower participants while surrounded by the ranch’s stunning natural beauty.

STR are hosting a female veterans retreat from March 6-10 to kick off the season.

“We try and utilize every moment for therapeutic opportunities,” Casey Monroe said, “Releasing of toxic traumas and providing healing and strengthening by teaching positive coping strategies and skills seems to best occur in the presence of other veterans, with a natural disconnect from outside distraction.”

Monroe is a licensed clinical social worker, a US Marine, and the director of mental health Service at STR. He specializes in the treatment of sexual abuse.

“Sadly, many women veterans have experienced childhood sexual abuse, as well as MST (Military Sexual Trauma),” Monroe said, “The level of sharing of trauma, and healing in this retreat was incredible So much bravery and willingness to push through the difficulties of combat, service and civilian life traumas to find healing by this group was truly amazing.”

He said that he utilizes an acupressure point tapping technique called Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), also known as tapping. It allows people to release any unwanted emotion they may carry.

“It’s incredibly powerful and life saving and changing when used properly to heal from traumatic life events,” Monroe said.

STR has been hosting programs since 2016. The focus is on providing veterans with a therapeutic and engaging experience. The five-day retreats often include hiking, sharing meals around a campfire, mountain biking, exploring and leaving their mark on the Ranch with service projects such as stone labyrinths, flag poles and blazing new hiking trails.

They recently received a $50,000 grant check from the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation and $40,000 in funding from the Bartley Family Foundation, which will be used to construct a workshop to aid in service projects at the Ranch.

STR’s programs are kept small so that each trip can be customized to the needs and interests of each group.

On their website, it states: “Our goal is to create a sense of community at Strongpoint Theinert Ranch that allows our participants to come away stronger than they arrived with newfound energy and friendships to improve their overall quality of life.”

There is no charge for veterans, veteran families, or Gold Star families to visit the ranch.
