Socorro local and outdoor enthusiast Robert Wulff is stepping into a new role as the sports reporter for the El Defensor Chieftain, bringing with him a diverse background in education, photography, and a deep love for the local community.

A 2001 graduate of New Mexico Tech with a bachelor’s degree in Engineering Mechanics, Wulff’s path has been anything but conventional. After earning his degree, he found a passion for teaching and later pursued his K-8 teaching certification through the New Mexico Alternative Licensure Program, also at New Mexico Tech, in 2022.

Wulff’s professional journey has been rich and varied. Over the years, he has worked as a substitute teacher, computer instructor, and 4th grade teacher in Socorro. His passion for the outdoors led him to teach rock climbing and outdoor recreation through New Mexico Tech’s Community College starting in 2002. He also spent several years as a hiking guide and educator in Arizona and Utah, experiences that solidified his connection to the natural world.

His foray into photography began in 2010, focusing primarily on landscapes and wildlife. But in 2022, Wulff was invited to photograph the Socorro Chile Harvest Triathlon, sparking a new interest in sports and event photography. Since then, he has returned to cover the triathlon annually, along with other races and athletic events.

“I found that I enjoyed sport and event photography a lot,” Wulff said. “So, when the sports reporting position here at my local paper opened up, it seemed like a wonderful new opportunity.”

In his new role, Wulff hopes to grow both professionally and personally. “I hope to expand my skills as a photographer and a writer,” he said. “I also hope to be more involved with even more aspects of community life here in Socorro County.”

El Defensor Chieftain editor Jessica Carranza Pino shared her excitement about Wulff’s addition to the team.

“I am thrilled to welcome Rob to the EDC team. His passion for photography, diverse skill set, and community-minded approach will be invaluable to our community newspaper,” she said. “Fun fact: Several years ago, while I was participating in the Jornada de la Quebradas 52k, Rob was taking photos. Luckily, he noticed I was going the wrong way and kindly directed me back onto the course.”

When he’s not covering sports, Wulff can often be found exploring the outdoors. A regular at Box Canyon, he enjoys hiking, camping, rock climbing, biking, and backpacking — passions that continue to fuel his appreciation for the landscape and people of Socorro.

With his deep local roots and well-rounded background, Wulff is eager to bring the stories of Socorro County’s athletes and sporting events to life.
