Schools ready for student influx starting Thursday
Despite the lingering heat and long days, summer break has ended, and students are returning to their classrooms this week.
Socorro Consolidated School students are reanimating the halls of their schools today, August 1, while Magdalena students will start on Monday, August 5. Both schools will continue their four-day weeks as the litigation with the Public Education Department continues in court.

Interim superintendent Aubrey Tucker said that enrollment is up, and he looks forward to the new school year.
“I want all teachers, students, parents and community members to know that the schools are open for you. We are going to be more accessible. We’re going to make sure that when parents have questions, we won’t take offense. We’re going to work out the issues and the challenges. I need for parents to ask more questions so we can improve as well,” Tucker said.
He wants to encourage parents to reach out with any concerns or issues.
“The only thing I ask is that we all do that in the most professional manner possible. My teachers are mothers, fathers, cousins, and uncles as well. My employees have feelings. When you talk to your adolescent remember that side of the story is their view of the story. When you interact with my employees, please tell them what you know from that side. And they will calmly tell you what they know from that site. And both you come together and figure out what will be in the child’s best interest.” Tucker said.

Superintendent Dr. Glenn Haven said they have been working on renovations over the summer to improve the school and foster a better learning environment. They are starting the school year with 280 students enrolled.
“The administration, teachers and support staff have worked really hard the last few months in order to make sure our schools are ready for all of our students when they arrive for the first day of school,” Haven said “We’ve also added several new teachers and staff members who are excited to be with us.”
He said he hopes everyone is well rested and ready to go after the summer break and wants to take the opportunity to welcome everyone back.
“We invite all of our stakeholders to drop by and visit with us when you get a chance. We are proud of what is happening at Magdalena, and we hope you are too. We look forward to serving your students as we work together to make our schools a great place to learn this school year. Remember we are Steer tough and will always be Steer strong,” Haven said
Schedules have been mailed out to families and an open house is scheduled for 5 p.m. on August 22.
