Socorro has new food service provider
Socorro schools will start the school year with a new breakfast and lunch provider. After negative feedback about the school food, the school board approved K12 by Elior as the new vendor for school food service in a May meeting. A school committee made the recommendation; using a rubric, they determined K12 by Elior had the highest score, and the board unanimously favored the recommendation.
According to Natasha Austin, K12 by Elior district manager in New Mexico, they partner with schools in Alamogordo, Carrizozo, Cloudcroft, Cimarron, Espanola, Farmington, Loving, Raton, Ruidoso, Tularosa, Tucumcari, and now Socorro.
“Items on the menu will likely change as we learn the needs of Socorro students better. We will definitely be incorporating salad bars, as well as prepared fresh salads. K12 by Elior prides itself on fresh scratch cooking,” Austin wrote in an email “On Wednesday of this week, we brought in two chefs from the surrounding areas to conduct culinary training to empower staff on scratch cooking techniques.”
Some items on the menus include blueberry overnight oats, breakfast enchiladas and baked apple empanadas for breakfast, a loaded baked potato bar, Mongolian chicken and fried rice, Cheesy Charro beans and a tamal.
Alternative food choices, snacks, fresh fruits, and vegetables are also offered each day. Students will also have access to daily sides from the grill, deli, salad, and to-go items.
