A cross between an Old West shoot-out and barrel racing is the equine sport of cowboy mounted shooting. This unique blend of tradition and modern competition drew participants from New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado to the Socorro Sports arena for a fast-growing competition last weekend.

The mounted shooters, in a thrilling display of skill and speed, compete for points based on time and accuracy. With a .45 caliber single action revolver, competitors draw the hammer back before each shot while moving as quickly as possible through their given pattern. Loaded with black powder like that used in the 1800’s the load will break balloons up to about 15 feet away.

A missed balloon, dropped gun, going off course, or falling off your horse each have penalties of 5 to 60 seconds.

“Even though we might be competing against one another, everyone is always so friendly, supportive and eager to talk with anyone and share advice and information. That is what makes this sport so special,” Kay Rivers of the New Mexico Territory Mounted Shooters said.

Rivers said she received many compliments from the participants on the rodeo complex venue and facilities. They will have their next New Mexico State Championship Shoot with a Chili Challenge in Socorro on September 28th and 29th.
