The Catron County Sheriff’s Office is investigating reports of eco-terrorism in Catron County and the surrounding areas. Residents are urged to report any suspicious activity to the sheriff’s office.

“We have had a rash of vandalism in Catron County recently; however, it hasn’t been exclusive to just Catron. It has been occurring in all our surrounding counties, including our Arizona neighbors,” Sheriff Keith Hughes said.

He said the main target has been seen in the ranching community and the U.S. Forest Service properties. The reports started coming in around mid-June, but they later learned that some incidents occurred as early as April but had not been reported.

“We have had wells and water systems sabotaged, damage to gates and fences, graffiti and even gates on water lots being closed, which keeps livestock from obtaining water until it’s discovered,” Hughes said. “These acts of eco-terrorism are widespread across the area and have happened at random locations and times.”

County Commissioner Audrey McQueen said that the vandalism and damage isn’t just impacting cattle but also wildlife who rely on the water as well.

Hughes reported that the investigation confirmed the involvement of multiple individuals.

“We have a couple of suspects but still in the process of placing them in the locations. We did arrest one man out of Nevada who was calling elected officials here and making threats in line with the incidents. However, we don’t believe he has any ties to what is going on now,” Hughes said.

He reported that law enforcement has increased its presence in the remote areas of the county, and they are following up all leads.

“It’s an ongoing investigation and we ask residents to report any suspicious activity and damage to local law enforcement, no matter the circumstances,” Hughes said.
