Firefighting stipends get approval
Socorro County Board of Commissions had a reorganization meeting on January 14 in which they established resolutions on appointments and meeting rules.
Incoming commissioners Phillip Montoya of District 5 and Danny Monette of District 4 were welcomed to their first board meeting.
Commissioners voted Joe Gonzales in as chair and Craig Secatero as vice-chair. They agreed to change meetings to once a month on the first Tuesday at 5 p.m. with the option of having a second meeting, if necessary, on the second Tuesday of the month, also at 5 p.m. Commissioners approved the reduction of public comment from five to three minutes.
Under action items, Manager Andy Lotrich recommended passing the volunteer firefighters stipend. He confirmed the stipends fall under the budget and that there will be monthly reports and a paper trail on volunteer hours.
“We will make sure that the individuals to receive the stipend are taking the higher training,” Lotrich said, “This way, we make sure that all of our county residents are going to have highly qualified individuals that are going to be providing these fire services.”
Commissioners unanimously approved stipends for volunteer fire departments.
The commissioners also approved three agreements: one with PMS for the Veguita health center, another with PHI for memberships for Socorro County residents, and an amendment to the food service management agreement with Socorro County to secure pricing for four years.
In a split 3-2 vote, commissioners withdrew support for the Utah Federal Lands Amicus Curiae. County Attorney Adren Nance told the commission as of that day, the Supreme Court did not agree to take the case, and he believed the case was dead at that point. He confirmed the withdrawal would only be on record, and no action would be taken.
After an executive session to discuss New Mexico Ethics Commission v. County Livestock Loss Board and personnel matters (County manager), the board approved an amended Joint Powers agreement regarding the CLLA board and moving the fiscal agent from Sierra County to Catron County.
The next meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. on February 11 at the County Annex I.
