Main Stream New Mexico, a campaign of the Interstate Stream Commission Water Planning Program, was set up at the Bureau of Geology building at New Mexico Tech on Tuesday to gather public input on regional water planning.

“We’re having a great turnout here today, and we’ve out been averaging about 30 to 40 people at each one of these events, which is really great,” Sara Fox, Senior Water Planner for Main Stream New Mexico, said.

Fox said they came out to Socorro for the regional planning of 2016-17 with the intention of returning for more feedback.

“Socorro and Sierra (counties) are one of the regions that previously existed as part of the regional water planning program. So, we are visiting each one of the regions and having an open house style meeting to gauge that area’s people about what they think about water planning and how it should be reimagined for the future,” Fox said.

She said they will consider all the questions, answers, feedback and comments they are gather as they draft the rules and guidelines, which is the next step in implementing the 2023 Water Security Planning Act.

The act was passed by the legislature in 2023 unanimously.

MSNM will be accepting online input until August 18 at mainstreamnm.org.
