Daniel Rufenacht of Magdalena was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter last week after a three-day jury trial.

The jury deliberated for over three and a half hours, reported officials.

He was found not guilty on the charges of second-degree murder and not guilty of resisting, evading, or obstructing, according to Socorro County Courthouse officials.

In 2023, on December 29 law enforcement responded to a shooting at approximately 2 p.m. in Magdalena that left Magdalena resident Sandra Apachito dead and Fred Leyba injured.

After almost seven hours of coaxing him out of his residence, Rufenacht was apprehended, reported Magdalena deputies.

His sentencing hearing is scheduled for April.
