Jake Chavez 1954-2024

Jake Chavez, age 70, a lifelong resident of Socorro, New Mexico, passed away peacefully at his home on November 18,2024. He was born to Joe and Nellie Chavez on November 13, 1954.

Jake is preceded in passing by his parents; brothers, Frank and Michael; uncle, Polito; aunt, Annie; and his girlfriend, Liz Gabaldon.

Jake is survived by his niece, Frances (Joe) Sanchez and their sons, Dominic, Jonathan (Sanova); niece, Roberta (Aaron) Baldonado; nephew, Frank Chavez; brother, Jerry Chavez; great nephews, Stetson, Wyatt, Jordan, and Henry; as well as great-niece, Davie. Jake also leaves behind many friends that he considered family, acquaintances he considered friends, and community members that will remember him fondly.

Jake was a simple man, who enjoyed nothing more than tending to his farms and ranches he devoted his life and time to. After retirement from the New Mexico State Highway Department, Jake spent his time harvesting the lushest hay crops from his farm and raising quality beef cattle on his ranch.

Whether you saw him at Sunday mass at San Miguel, or he was enjoying a meal at Sofia’s, his favorite spot to get a bite, he’d never leave you without a tip of his hat, a handshake, or a hello. Although he never had children of his own, his unwavering dedication and love reflected in the care he put into his agricultural splendors.

He was a kind and caring soul that will be missed greatly. The paths he forged, and the impressions he made will never be forgotten.

Services for Jake took place on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at San Miguel Catholic Church. A visitation was held at 9:00 am, followed by a rosary at 9:30 am. Mass was then recited at 10:00 am. Jake was then laid to rest at the Luis Lopez Catholic Cemetery immediately following the mass.

Pallbearers will be Jonathon Sanchez, Dominic Chavez, Henry Garcia, Dave Montano, Raymond Lee Greenwood, and Sean Gabaldon. Honorary pallbearer is Greg Torres.
