Juan José Gutierrez, 85, of Magdalena, New Mexico, passed away peacefully on September 22, 2025, after courageously battling cancer for nearly a decade.

Born on July 31, 1940, in Apache Creek, NM, Juan was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and public servant. From 1974–1994 he owned and operated the West Bar, and he dedicated much of his life to serving Socorro County and the Village of Magdalena.

His roles included County Commissioner (18 years), County Clerk (4 years), Road Superintendent (4 years), Mayor of Magdalena (6 years), and Village Trustee (2 years). He also served on the Socorro County Hospital Board, the Southern Rio Grande Council of Governments, and the New Mexico–Arizona Coalition of Counties.

Juan enjoyed hunting, politics, and cheering on the Magdalena High School boys’ basketball team. He especially cherished time with his family and friends, exploring the mountains around Magdalena—his beloved “God’s Country”—always with a sharp eye for the biggest bulls. Above all, Juan’s tremendous faith guided him throughout his life, and he found strength and peace in prayer.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Elizabeth Mitchell Gutierrez; his children; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; siblings; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Gina Gutierrez Sisneroz; his brothers, Ben, Andy, and Ernest Gutierrez; and his parents, Eulalio and Rebecca Gutierrez.

A rosary and funeral Mass will be held Saturday, October 11, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church, with burial to follow at Magdalena Community Cemetery.

Juan’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him, and his legacy of faith, service, strength, and generosity will never be forgotten. The family kindly asks that you keep him in your thoughts and prayers.
