Dear Sammy

Dear Sammy

Dear Sammy,

I hope this note finds you well. I read about your new venture in the El Defensor Chieftain. I would like to know, what is one thing from your youth is that we no longer do that we should bring back, and what is one thing our kids do now we should stop.

Thank you,

Curious George

Dear Curious George,

Some things we would like to see more of from when we were growing up are discipline and respect. It seems as though many kids are allowed to goof off without understanding the consequences. It’s also become a new thing that during family functions, they are allowed to sit in their rooms alone and away from the family. Growing up for us, it was always required that we stayed out, helped, and visited when it came to those occasions. This may seem like an obvious one, but turn off the technology! Children need to soak up the real world and have social interaction outside of technology; it’s become a setback from learning life skills, and a huge distraction in our schools.

Dear Sammy,

What do you think the strengths and weaknesses of Socorro have been in the last 30 years?

Thank you,

MX

Dear MX,

Socorro has many strengths; we find the most within the people and the community. The culture within our town has to be the greatest of all, which includes our excellent music community. Things we also enjoy about Socorro include the weather, quietness, views of the land and mountains, and the wonderful family-owned restaurants. Also, if you haven’t taken the drive from Socorro to Magdalena, it’s highly recommended! As far as weaknesses go, the population of homeless people and those on drugs has grown to uncomfortable numbers. It seems as though jobs are scarce here as well, and when there are openings, places are too eager to hire help that new employees may not be trained properly. Finding affordable housing in Socorro has also gotten rather difficult, and the lack of accessible public transportation makes it hard for those who can’t drive. We love our town and community!

Whether you’re facing a personal crossroads, seeking relationship advice, or just curious about what Socorro’s seasoned voices have to say, the residents at Socorro Wellness and Rehabilitation (formerly named The Good Samaritan) are ready to listen.
