The New Mexico Tech Board of Regents reaffirmed NMT’s mission and values at a special meeting on Dec. 12, 2024.

Our mission to advance education and research in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) intertwines with our values of excellence, innovation, creativity, collaboration, and inclusivity.

Since our founding in 1889, we have empowered generations of scientists, engineers, and problem-solvers through these tenets to innovate and create solutions that benefit New Mexico and society as a whole.

These precepts, which define and guide us, additionally inform our strategic plan, which is comprised of integrated themes: empowering student success; enriching engaged learning; diversity, equity, and inclusion-driven excellence; amplifying research innovation; energizing community; and financial resilience.

To lead in STEM requires openness to new perspectives and a welcoming environment that fosters collaboration.

NMT considers inclusivity not only a value but also a necessity for innovation. This principle drives discovery, from quantum materials and microbial processes to star formation, and fuels partnerships with organizations ranging from the U.S. military to local schools. Our research also yields practical solutions, like the nicotine patch, and advances in spacecraft health monitoring and water quality.

We are equally passionate about outreach, engaging young learners through camps, competitions, and partnerships. These initiatives inspire K-12 students to envision themselves as leaders and problem-solvers of tomorrow, ensuring a vibrant pipeline of talent ready to tackle challenges of the future.

The reaffirmation of our mission and values invites all to engage with NMT—students, collaborators, and supporters. We are committed to creating an environment where everyone, regardless of background, can dream, innovate, and make a difference.

Together, we will continue to shape a future where NMT serves as a beacon of knowledge, inclusivity, and impact—on our campus, across New Mexico, and beyond.
