Letter to the Editor: Truth, justice and freedom can save us at the ballot box
Editor:
We learned this week that Army General Mark Milley told Watergate journalist Bob Woodward “I had suspicions when I talked to you about his mental decline and so forth, but now I realize he’s a total fascist.”
Why does this matter to little Socorro?
Fascists spread hate. It’s how they get power. They turn people against each other, including in Socorro.
According to this fascist, I personally should be hated because I am a liberal, because I am a university professor, because I am a democrat, because I am a Jew who does not support Israel’s genocidal war.
Of course the Socorro police won’t come for me first.
First they will be instructed to come for the immigrants, both legal and illegal, in the mass deportations that Trump has promised will begin on day one.
Next they will come for the trans people; because they are kind of weird and confusing.
Next they will pass a national abortion ban (with Yvette Herrell’s vote) and then come for Socorro women and doctors who try to have this procedure anyway.
I have spoken to strong Republicans who admit “Trump is an a..hole’’. They will vote for him anyway because of party loyalty and a belief he might have some good policies.
Trump damaged America by spreading hate and lies during his first Presidency, culminating in the unending lies about election fraud that always lost in court.
He was restrained from doing more damage by staff members and a Vice-President who remembered what it means to be an American.
Trump will hire only completely compliant staff in a second term.
Trump devotees think immigrants and liberals are destroying America.
No, hatred and lies are destroying America right now, and Socorro will not be safe.
Only Americans who remember the core values of truth, justice and freedom can save us at the ballot box.
