No longer just visiting
After spending the summer exploring your “small” town, I decided I liked it enough to make the move. The history and culture surrounding the area is intriguing. Being introduced to the Socorro County Historical Society was great. I don’t remember there being anything like that in any of the other places I have lived. It seems like a place that has it all, haunted motels, a whole historical plaza where I can just get lost in that area walking around checking out old houses and mansions, and a McDonald’s playground for my kid, which is also a rarity these days.
I have many plans coming up for exploring more of the history of the area. We have also spent the weekend checking out every park in the area, the duck pond area at Tech, my son is determined to use every swing in Socorro County and go down every slide. A big highlight of our move was visiting the farmers market, where some nice woman tried to get my son to try different vegetables, including kale and a very tiny carrot. He was enamored by the musicians in the plaza, who were very friendly and let him closely examine their instruments.
Everyone has been so friendly, as a mom of a special needs child that is not common normally. Usually we are looked at as an inconvenience everywhere we go. If my son gets frustrated in a store, it leads to being glared at by several strangers. I haven’t had that experience here in Socorro and it has been so refreshing and made a huge difference in my son’s behavior. It also makes me feel better as I can be a little self-conscious of being judged by others. We are able to go out and explore without being worried about inconveniencing everyone in town if he happens to have a bad moment.
I don’t have some fun history facts for you this week, as moving has taken up most of my time lately. I was extended an invitation to check out the Hammel Brewery which is now the museum for the Socorro County Historical Society. I also am planning on checking out the Val Verde Hotel once filming wraps up there. Once again, I am easy to spot with my pink hair. If you see me around and have some interesting stories or a historical place you want me to check out, I am all ears!
